Two weeks of confinement passed without further incident, and I was released back into student society.
I'd had plenty of time to think about what I wanted to do when my evenings and weekends were my own again. I would go walking around the grounds. I would go back to trying out different clubs and classes. I would linger over dinner instead of hurrying back to my room. I would, of course, keep going to the library, because my newfound interest in Shifter history was growing into a borderline obsession. But my first priority, for which I'd been building up the courage this whole time, was to go talk about art.
I found Deangelo sitting in an armchair in the window of a common room. He had a sketch pad spread across his knees and a pencil dancing across the page. Outside, rain poured down from a sky the monotonous gray of concrete. Just because it was watering the lawn didn't mean it could dampen my mood.
"Hi." I shifted from foot to foot, my hands clasped tightly behind my back.
"Hey Kit." Deangelo looked up at me and smiled. My stomach did a little flip. "How are you enjoying freedom again?"
I blushed. "You knew it was today?"
"Been counting down, waiting for my muse."
I beamed and took the seat next to him. "What are you drawing?"
He showed me a sketch of the room we sat in. He'd exaggerated everything in it—the bulges of stuffing bursting out of worn, old chairs, the damp stain on the wall, the shapes of people's noses. Even the door appeared to loom larger and more angular. The cartoonish style somehow made the sketch seem more alive than the reality.
"You're not planning on painting me like that, are you?" I asked in mock horror.
"Only if you ask me to," he said with a wink. "I was wondering if you'd still be up for being painted."
"I could certainly be persuaded." I leaned in close, making as if to better see his sketch, but mostly just wanting to be closer to him. "When do we start?"
"How's right now sound?"
He closed his pad, put away his pencils, and stood up. I followed him from the common room and out through the Citadel. We weren't going fast, yet I found myself a little breathless.
We stopped at the locked door of one of the art classrooms. Deangelo pulled out a key.
"How did you get that?" I asked, wondering if he was about to reveal a bad boy side.
"Professor gave it to me, so I could work on a piece for a competition. Surely, you've had one of the staff encourage you to do something more outside of class?"
"I guess there's Pierce's history project, but I volunteered for that."
"And you didn't notice that everyone ends up volunteering for something?"
I'd been so caught up in my own concerns that I had genuinely missed this. It seemed like I didn't know much about what was going on in the lives of my fellow students. What had seemed like
